How do I install the WPS?

Follow the steps below to install the Wireless Ped System (WPS):

  1. Ensure proper signal quality between WPS and WPC

For connectivity:

  • Ensure unobstructed line-of-sight between the antennas
  • Ensure both antennas are at the same height
  • Install the WPS between 5 and 20 ft from the signal head
  1. Plan out pole placement of WPS

The WPS must be positioned:

  • Where its APS will be accessible to people with disabilities – see MUTCD 11 4I.05 or our Ultimate APS Application Guide for details
  • At least 10 ft from any other APS to avoid confusion
  • Near the curb ramp for its crosswalk
  • Where it will be exposed to enough sunlight to keep the battery charged
  1. Install Polara Wireless Ped Head Control Unit (WPC)

The Wireless Ped Head Control Unit installs easily into pedestrian signal heads using the included hardware kit and external antenna:

  1. Drill a ÂĽ in hole in the ped head roof or floor for the antenna
  2. Attach the WPC unit to the mounting plate, and the mounting plate to the back of the ped head (if ped head does not already have tapped 1/4" holes, drill and tap holes to attach the mounting plate)
  3. Run jumper wires from the ped head’s terminal block (AC Neutral (ACN), Walk (WK), and Don’t Walk (DW)) to the unit’s input power terminal block, and attach the antenna
  4. At actuated intersections, connect the button wires to the Contact Closure terminals. The polarity of the button wires doesn’t matter.
  5. Record the serial number of the WPC and identify which Ped Head it is installed in. This information will be needed later.
  6. Close the ped head and restore power to it.
  1. Install pole

The optional Frey pole can install in less than 45 minutes on the existing sidewalk:

  1. Drill 5 in deep holes in sidewalk for anchor bolts
  2. Epoxy bolts into sidewalk
  3. Mount base to bolts and level
  4. Thread pipe into base

  1. Install iNS

  1. Drill and tap mounting holes and drill the wire pass-through hole
  2. Pass a 5 ft. section of the 16 ft. cable though the pass-through hole down into the base
  3. Mount the iNS backplate to the pole
  4. Install the iNS to the backplate and cable
  1. Install solar kit

  1. Attach the wedge casting to the solar kit body using the adhesive gasket and screws
  2. Thread bolts and wedge casting into pole casting
  3. Feed 11 ft. cable through solar kit and pole casting into pole, and install pole casting on pole with solar kit body oriented south.
  4. Assemble solar panel
  5. Attach battery harnesses to batteries and place batteries into solar kit, but do not connect harnesses to kit yet
  6. Connect 11 ft. and 5 ft. cables in pole base and close base cover
  7. Connect battery harnesses to solar kit, connect solar panel connectors to solar kit, and close solar kit lid.
  1. Set up WPS with Polara Field Service App

  1. Power the ped head
  2. Use the Field Service App to connect to the ped head control unit
  3. Change the default password and name of the control unit (the WPC will not operate until its password is changed to a non-default value)
  4. Use the Field Service App to connect to the solar kit
  5. Scan for control units that the solar kit can detect
  6. Select the control unit the solar kit should associate with
  7. Restart the solar kit and verify the iNS is working as intended
